The Silence Is Deafening | Isaiah 41:21–29
In Isaiah 41:21–29, God continues His courtroom challenge against the idols of the nations. When called upon to explain the past, declare the future, or demonstrate their power, the idols are completely silent. They can do nothing.
By contrast, the LORD demonstrates that He alone is sovereign over the nations and over history. More than a century before it happens, God declares that He will raise up Cyrus to accomplish His purposes. From Abraham, through Judah and David, God is directing history toward the coming King who will rule over the nations.
This passage challenges us to confront the idols in our own lives. We may not worship Marduk, Baal, or Dagon, but we can still look to created things for the power, approval, comfort, or control that only God can provide.
How can we identify our idols?
Where do we look for power, approval, comfort, or control?
What do we daydream about?
What do we most fear losing?
What produces disproportionate anger, anxiety, despair, or guilt?
Where do we spend our money without much thought?
Isaiah calls us to abandon our useless idols and turn to the King who comes from Jerusalem—Jesus Christ.
